A tech pioneer celebrated as a genius promotes his visionary projects to revolutionise the livelihood of people worldwide. A hacker warns against the accumulation of power by a few global corporations and researches artificial intelligence. A politician pushes the digitalisation of state institutions and is confronted with the challenges of disinformation, data and consumer protection.

Technology has pervaded all areas of society. BETA, here as a world premiere, explores not only the potential of digital tools but also the risks inherent in the monetarisation of relinquished private data. To what extent do the economic interests and tactics of tech multinationals clash with ethical issues and constitutional questions? How can European laws and state institutions effectively regulate the power of global high-tech corporations and protect people’s civic rights? The work is based on research by Christiane Mudra, a writer/director who uses leaks, legal texts and interviews with industry experts to explore the interplay between policymakers, society and tech concerns.

Dariya Maminova’s composition interweaves genres and blends live sounds with intricate electronic music, constantly toying with our perception of analogue and digitally generated music. Interactive tools encourage the audience to adopt a stance on the issues raised and influence the course of the performance.

Ein als Genie gefeierter Tech-Pionier wirbt für seine visionären Projekte, mit denen er die Lebensgrundlage der Menschen weltweit revolutionieren will. Eine Hackerin warnt vor der Machtakkumulation weniger globaler Konzerne und forscht zu künstlicher Intelligenz. Eine Politikerin treibt die Digitalisierung staatlicher Einrichtungen voran und ist mit den Herausforderungen von Desinformation, Daten- und Verbraucherschutz konfrontiert.

Technische Innovationen haben längst alle Lebensbereiche durchdrungen. Die Uraufführung BETA beleuchtet die Potentiale digitaler Tools, aber auch die Risiken, die etwa von intransparenten Datensätzen, Algorithm Biases und der Monetarisierung privater Nutzer*innendaten ausgehen. Inwieweit kollidieren die wirtschaftlichen Interessen und Methoden der Internet-Giganten mit ethischen und verfassungsrechtlichen Fragen? Können nationale und europarechtliche Regelungen die Macht transnationaler Tech-Konzerne wirksam regulieren? Wie können staatliche Institutionen und Einzelne die Interessen der Bürger*innen vor Willkür und Machtmissbrauch schützen?

Der Arbeit zugrunde liegt die investigative Recherche der Regisseurin und Autorin Christiane Mudra, die anhand von Leaks, Gesetzestexten, Interviews mit Expert*innen die Wechselwirkung von Tech-Konzernen, Politik und Gesellschaft untersucht. Dariya Maminova verwebt in ihrer Komposition kunstvoll Genres, mischt Live-Sound mit komplexer Elektronik und spielt dabei immer wieder mit den Grenzen unserer Wahrnehmung von analog und digital erzeugter Musik. Durch interaktive Abstimmungstools wird das Publikum dazu eingeladen, sich selbst zu den aufgeworfenen Fragen zu positionieren und den Fortgang der Aufführung mitzugestalten.
