Boston Symphony Orchestra; Direction: Leonard Bernstein. This recording was made on July 25, 1972 at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Tanglewood Summer Festival is one of the most famous music festivals in the United States. In contrast to the stormy and dramatic First, Brahms's Second Symphony is cheerful and lyrical. The music can be understood as a reflection of the idyllic landscape around Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, where Brahms composed the work in the summer of 1877. However, Brahms himself pointed to an underlying melancholy masked by the pastoral cheerfulness.
