Het ruige Schotse landschap maakten op Bruch en Mendelssohn zo’n onuitwisbare indruk, dat ze die ze in muziek moesten vatten. Hoor je de klarinet en de hobo de doedelzak imiteren?

De melancholische viool opent de Schotse fantasie van Max Bruch. Je voelt de heimwee naar de open hemel en het natte gras. De vioolvirtuoos Paul Huang leidt weelderige klanken, steeds levendiger en zangeriger over de highlands. Hij is een goede muzikale vriend van onze terugkerend gastdirigent – en aanstaand chef-dirigent – Jun Märkl. Ook de Derde symfonie van Mendelssohn is een ode aan de Schotse onstuimigheid. Je hoort het wapengekletter van strijders en ziet de modder van paardenhoeven door de lucht vliegen. Hier en daar herken je ook de volksmelodieën, met speelse ritmes en de nodige lyriek.

Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy opens with the melancholy sound of the violin, evoking a keen sense of longing for the vast sky and the damp grass. Violin virtuoso Paul Huang will lead us across the Highlands with rich, increasingly expressive melodies. He's a close musical friend of our returning guest conductor and incoming principal conductor, Jun Märkl. Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 similarly pays homage to Scotland's rugged landscape. Can you hear the warriors' weapons clash, see the mud kicked up by their horses' hooves? Here and there, you'll be able to catch a glimpse of folk melodies, with their lively rhythms and heartfelt lyricism.
