The Chapel Royal in the Tower of London provides an intimate backdrop for Byrd’s rarely-performed Great Service, an opulent tapestry intricately woven by ten voices, interspersed with delicate songs and keyboard music.

Political and religious turmoil was rife during the first half of the 16th century, but the coronation of Elizabeth I as Queen in 1559 heralded a new era of stability and prosperity. Elizabeth was a supporter of music throughout her reign and showed particular fondness for the work of composer William Byrd.
