In 1875 the opera Carmen gave shape to a woman with an almost mythical seductive power. Carmen embodied the hidden desire of the rock-solid 19th-century citizen and represented the freedom generally lacking in their narrow morals. For 19th-century civic culture she was above all a personification of exoticism and the longing for another world. But with her uncompromising pursuit of free life and love, Carmen continues to intrigue even today. Carmen lives her ideals and fearlessly goes to extremes: vive la liberté!

The young Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza is a leader for his generation and makes his debut with Dutch National Opera with a fresh approach to Bizet's score. The exceptional French tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac will play the role of Don José and with J'Nai Bridges in the role of Carmen we present one of the most requested Carmens of the moment.
