Carmina Burana/Svěcení jara
Oratorio / Orchestral
The wheel of fortune revolves and says "I will rule, I reign, I have ruled, I have lost the empire" - this is the central idea and structure of one of the most famous cantatas of the 20th century, Carmina Buran by the German composer Carl Orff. It is part of the so-called Trionf together with Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodita. The cantata was based on a set of medieval poems and songs - satirical, love, religious, drunken. From two hundred original texts in Latin, Old French, Italian or German, found in the Beurum Monastery, Carel Orff selected a section and divided them into six thematic units. Carmina Burana was first performed with great success in 1937 at the Frankfurt Opera and after World War II. During the war, it literally became a cult composition, which sounded not only from concert stages, but also on the movie screen. As in Stravinsky's music, the basic musical element for Orff is rhythm, and through an enormous musical apparatus - an orchestra with an extended drum section, choir and children's choir - it has achieved truly impressive moments in the work, where the wheel of happiness turns, joy, love , sadness, hope. Everything opens and ends with the number belonging to Lucky, the ruler of the world The arrival of spring has been celebrated since ancient times and the pagan rituals of ancient times associated with it have become an inspiration for artists as well. The most famous is Igor Stravinsky and his Rite of Spring , composed for Dagilev's Russian Ballet. The Paris premiere of 1913 caused a scandal thanks to avant-garde music and bold stage performances, but in the following years this captivating work became part of the repertoire not only of ballet ensembles, but of concert stages.
