1:00:40Applause 1st act. When the box office with the entrance fees falls to the floor for the ringmaster, the sleeping circus wakes up and doom takes its course. The animals wake up in their narrow cages, groping restlessly in their cages, because the tigress has dreamed of hunt and blood. The ringmaster calls his artists. The performance is about to start, the audience is already there and everything seems very peaceful. But Rodolfo, the tamer in the small circus, has stolen the circus director's cash register and wants to disappear with it before the performance. But he is blackmailed by the lover of the ringmaster, the bearded lady Olga, who saw him doing it. Because she wants to get rid of the circus director's daughter, the artist Lucie, With which she is on the one hand in constant quarrel and on the other hand stands in her way with the secretly beloved clown Bruno. For her silence, Olga demands that Rodolfo take Lucie with him on his escape. Rodolfo also easily wraps Lucie around his finger with his promises, because Lucie is as ambitious as Rodolfo, who seems to be a better match for her than Bruno. In the meantime the performance begins, the ringmaster announces his sensations and first asks Rodolfo with the Siberian tigress into the ring. Little Bruno overheard Lucie and Rodolfo making plans and is almost bursting with jealousy. In order to get revenge, he penetrates his rival's cloakroom, believing his beautiful costume to be the attack, but to his surprise he finds the Zikus cash register and a pistol in the packed travel bag. He takes both to blacken Rodolfo at the ringmaster and to bring her back. But he is caught by Lucie on the way there. Lucie thinks Bruno is the thief, sneers at him and takes the cash register from him with great contempt. However, she does not bring the cash register to her father straight away. In the meantime, the bearded lady is shown dancing with the bear in the arena. Finally, Lucie decides to keep the money and take it with her on her secret escape with Rodolfo.
