Philippe Herreweghe and his sublime Collegium Vocale are synonymous with Bach. With the latter’s St Matthew Passion on his music stand, the Ghent-based conductor returns to DE SINGEL. The work links poetry and reflection to the story about the imprisonment and death of Christ. The large-scale music for double choir and orchestra tacks between narrative recitatives and choruses, contemplative arias and pious chorales. Timeless music that leaves no one unmoved. Philippe Herreweghe and his troops are uniquely skilled at penetrating to the core of the notes and words.
