Along with the recorder and viol, the harpsichord is one of the instruments that has been sidelined in the course of musical history. In the course of the ever-increasing demands in terms of sonority and color that were placed on the instruments, the chirping sound of this keyboard instrument, the touch of which can be varied only slightly, appeared rigid, outdated - and in the romantic orchestra too quiet. It was only in the 20th century, after the fin de siècle had exhausted the intoxication of emotion and sound, that interest returned to the intimate, “objective” sound of this baroque instrument. And with the modern sound technology, the volume argument is also off the table, rather the amplification opens up completely new musical possibilities. The Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin plays with this field of tension between old and new,

Das Cembalo gehört zusammen mit der Blockflöte und der Gambe zu den Instrumenten, die im Laufe der Musikgeschichte ins Abseits geraten sind. Im Zuge der immer größeren Anforderungen in Sachen Klangfülle und -farbe, die an das Instrumentarium gestellt wurden, erschien der zirpende Ton dieses Tasteninstrumentes, dessen Anschlag sich nur wenig variieren lässt, als starr, veraltet – und im romantischen Orchesterapparat als zu leise. Erst das 20. Jahrhundert interessierte sich nach dem Ausreizen von Gefühls- und Klangrausch im Fin de siècle wieder für den intimen, „objektiven“ Klang dieses barocken Instruments. Und mit der modernen Klangtechnik ist auch das Lautstärke-Argument vom Tisch, vielmehr eröffnet die Verstärkung ganz neue musikalische Möglichkeiten. Die australische Komponistin Elena Kats-Chernin spielt mit diesem Spannungsfeld von alt und neu, indem sie in ihrem Cembalokonzert alte Briefe – die ersten schriftlichen Zeugnisse des zentralasiatischen Volkes der Sogden – zu neuem musikalischen Leben erweckt.
