Um die Abgründe der Liebe geht es in fast allen Opern Mozarts – doch in keiner so ausschliesslich wie in Così fan tutte. Hier scheint zunächst alles einfach, klar und unerschütterlich: Ferrando und Guglielmo lieben Dorabella und Fiordiligi. Dass die Frauen ihnen treu sind, darauf gehen die Männer jede Wette ein. Auch mit Don Alfonso, der sicher ist, ihnen mit einem Experiment das Gegenteil vorführen zu können. Also ziehen die Männer zum Schein in den Krieg und kehren verkleidet zurück – in der Absicht, die Verlobte des jeweils anderen zu verführen und unter Beweis zu stellen, dass dies vollkommen unmöglich ist. Doch was als harmloses Verkleidungsspiel geplant war, entwickelt sich zum grausamen Experiment am offenen Herzen, das allen Beteiligten schliesslich den Boden unter den Füssen wegzieht: Die Figuren müssen erkennen, dass das, was sie glauben zu fühlen, und das, was sie tatsächlich empfinden, in schmerzhaftem Widerspruch zueinander steht. Mozart schaut seinen Figuren tief ins Herz; wie kein anderer weiss er mit seiner Musik von der verwirrenden Vielschichtigkeit ihrer Seelenlagen zu erzählen. Kirill Serebrennikov ist einer der derzeit interessantesten und unbequemsten Film-, Theater- und Opernregisseure Russlands. Am Moskauer Bolschoi-Theater war zuletzt das (zunächst mit Aufführungsverbot belegte) Ballett Nurejew in seiner Inszenierung zu sehen. Seit August 2017 steht Serebrennikov in Moskau unter Hausarrest. Ihm wird vorgeworfen, staatliche Gelder veruntreut zu haben; die Vermutung, dass es sich um eine Strafaktion gegen den politisch unbequem gewordenen Künstler handelt, liegt jedoch nahe. Das Opernhaus Zürich bringt Così fan tutte dennoch auf die Bühne. Serebrennikovs Konzept wird von seinem Co-Regisseur Evgeny Kulagin umgesetzt.

Almost all of Mozart's operas deal with the abysses of love - but none so exclusively as in Così fan tutte. At first everything seems simple, clear and unshakable here: Ferrando and Guglielmo love Dorabella and Fiordiligi. The men are willing to bet that the women will be loyal to them. Also with Don Alfonso, who is sure that he can show them the opposite with an experiment. So the men pretend to go to war and come back in disguise - intending to seduce each other's fiancé and prove that this is utterly impossible. But what was planned as a harmless disguise game develops into a cruel open-heart experiment that finally pulls the rug out from under everyone involved: the characters have to realize that what they think they are feeling and what they are actually feeling is are in painful contradiction to each other. Mozart looks deep into the hearts of his characters; Like no other, he knows how to use his music to tell of the bewildering complexity of their emotional states. Kirill Serebrennikov is one of the most interesting and uncomfortable film, theater and opera directors in Russia today. Most recently, the ballet (which was initially banned) was at the Bolshoi Theater in MoscowTo see Nureyev in his production. Serebrennikov has been under house arrest in Moscow since August 2017. He is accused of embezzling state funds; however, the assumption that this is a punitive action against the artist, who has become politically uncomfortable, is reasonable. Nevertheless, the Zurich Opera House brings Così fan tutte to the stage. Serebrennikov's concept will be implemented by his co-director Evgeny Kulagin.
