Ainsi s’achève le voyage musical et poétique entamé à l’automne par Matthias Goerne et Christoph Eschenbach. Ni cohérence narrative, ni unité thématique, le Chant du cygne n’est pas un cycle à proprement parler, comme La Belle Meunière et le Voyage d’hiver, mais un recueil assemblé après la mort du compositeur sous un titre nécessairement testamentaire par l’éditeur Tobias Haslinger. Trois poètes, Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine, Johann Gabriel Seidl enfin pour le dernier Lied, Die Taubenpost, et une absolue variété tant dans le traitement de la forme que des sujets, de l’amour insouciant à la détresse cosmique : c’est tout l’art de Schubert qui se trouve concentré dans ces compositions ultimes. Et c’est tout l’art de Matthias Goerne d’en être, inlassable Wanderer, l’intime et pénétrant messager.
