This is Charpentier's masterpiece, and one of the miracles of Baroque opera!
If Marc-Antoine Charpentier spent most of his career without being able to access the Opera, of which Lully had the royal privilege, he was nevertheless able to create an lyrical masterpiece under very specific conditions. In 1688, the Louis Le Grand college, in the tradition of theatrical, musical and choreographic practice of the Jesuits, thus represented his lyrical tragedy David and Jonathas, with acts interspersed between those of the play Saul. This musical work relates on a well-known subject of the Old Testament, the deep friendship - the biblical love - of David and Jonathan, son of King Saul (the latter persuaded of the betrayal of the young David, spent in the camp Philistine after his banishment). The extraordinary inspiration of Charpentier's music, the dramatic force of the libretto, and the intense emotion that emanates from the work, gave him great success from the time, as evidenced by several occasions in other Jesuit colleges. . Voici le chef-d’œuvre de Charpentier, et l’un des miracles de l’opéra baroque !

Si Marc-Antoine Charpentier passa l'essentiel de sa carrière sans pouvoir accéder à l'Opéra, dont Lully avait le privilège royal, il put cependant créer un chef-d'œuvre lyrique dans des conditions très particulières. En 1688, le collège Louis Le Grand, dans la tradition de pratique théâtrale, musicale et chorégraphique des Jésuites, représenta ainsi sa tragédie lyrique David et Jonathas, aux actes intercalés entre ceux de la pièce de théâtre Saül. Cette œuvre musicale relate sur un sujet bien connu de l’Ancien Testament, l'amitié profonde - l’amour biblique - de David et de Jonathas, fils du Roi Saül (ce dernier persuadé de la trahison du jeune David, passé dans le camp Philistin après son bannissement). L'affrontement inévitable de leurs armées conduit Saül vaincu au suicide et Jonathas à la mort dans les bras de David victorieux…

L'extraordinaire inspiration de la musique de Charpentier, la force dramatique du livret, et l'émotion intense qui se dégage de l'œuvre, lui firent connaître dès l'époque un grand succès, dont témoignent plusieurs reprises dans d'autres collèges jésuites. Le présent spectacle se veut un rêve baroque : représenter le drame sacré David et Jonathas dans la Chapelle Royale de Versailles, avec un décor somptueux d’Antoine et Roland Fontaine, des costumes de Christian Lacroix, la mise en scène baroque et éclatante de Marshall Pynkoski, la chorégraphie de Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, et l’admirable vision musicale de Gaétan Jarry conduisant des solistes d’exception.
