The popular story about the cursed ship of a wandering sailor, doomed to eternal wandering on the ocean, has existed among Dutch sailors since the 16th century. In the 19th century, Heine processed folk legend in the spirit of the romantic drama of rock: it was she who inspired the young Wagner to compose the opera-marina. An autobiographical fact also played a certain role in the composer’s interest in this plot: during a sea voyage, the ship on which Wagner was located fell into a storm, and for several days it washed up on the shores of Norway, the country where the action of The Flying Dutchman takes place. The idea of the opera, written in just seven weeks, was defined by its author as "through the storms of life - longing for peace." In his work, the theme of damnation is complemented by the theme of redemption, and the story of the Flying Dutchman finds a happy ending: the love of the daughter of the Norwegian sailor Senta frees the fatal wanderer from the torture of immortality. The music of the opera follows the style of an excited narration, captivating with bright portraits of the main characters and expressive scenes, including those of a folk and domestic character, among which the dashing choir of sailors and the song spin are especially successful. The world premiere of The Flying Dutchman took place in 1843 in Dresden under the direction of Wagner himself. The first production of the opera at the Mariinsky Theater was staged in 1898 with an international cast of soloists conducted by Bernhard Stavenhagen. In 1911, a new stage version of The Dutchman appeared, designed by the outstanding theater designer Konstantin Korovin, conductor Albert Coates. On the initiative of maestro Gergiev, in 1998, on the centenary of the first performance of the opera on the Mariinsky Stage, the premiere of the play directed by Temur Chkheidze (stage designers - Georgy Tsypin and Evgeny Monakhov) took place. The current production, staged in conjunction with the Baden-Baden Festival in 2008 and also directed by Valery Gergiev, features a team of British theatrical masters led by director Ian Judge. The scenography of this performance is centered on a gigantic house-sized ship of a wandering sailor, whose appearances mark the turning points of the drama.
