Escaping from the burdens of the Riga period by going on a risky sea voyage gave the young composer Richard Wagner a musical vision for a new work that marked the beginning of his original style. The Wandering Dutchman opened a new and significant page in the history of Latvian music - with its production under the direction of Teodors Reiter in 1918, the newly founded Latvian Opera Troupe began its activities. with which the modern Latvian National Opera and Ballet is directly connected. It is with this work, interpreted by conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš and director Viesturs Kairiš, that the Latvian National Opera and Ballet marks the beginning of the second centenary of its existence! "While fleeing from Riga by ship, Wagner got stuck in time. This ship, endlessly stuck in mythical time, has again docked at its starting point. Time and space - Riga. Maybe it's a shipwreck dumped on the shore of a lonely sea, maybe it's a plane that crashed in the desert. It is important that the Dutchman, in his wanderings, has once again visited the city where Wagner turned from a bandleader into a composer," says director Viesturs Kairišs about the production. Every time that Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) has appeared during the history of the Latvian National Opera it has defined the boundaries between legend and reality, past and future, and yet has also led in new directions. Fleeing the difficulties of his time in Riga, sailing off on a risky sea voyage gave the young composer a vision of a new production that was to mark the beginnings of his original style. In the history of Latvian music The Flying Dutchman opened a new and important chapter – with the 1918 production, under the leadership of Teodors Reiters, the Latvju Opera troupe, which evolved into the current Latvian National Opera and Ballet, began its work. And it is with this opera, as interpreted by conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš and director Viesturs Kairišs, that the Latvian National Opera and Ballet begun its second century!

“Richard Wagner fled from a complicated financial situation in Riga, and got stuck in time, in eternity. That time he fled first via land, then onboard a ship. Maybe today he would flee on an airplane. He experienced a storm, but it’s doubtful if he would have liked air pockets any better. And then he saw a reflection. At first it seemed to be a ghost ship helmed by a dead captain, but at closer inspection Wagner recognized himself in the eternally wandering, unhappy adventurer who cannot find peace,” says the director of the production, Viestur Kairish.

"The opera Der fliegende Holländer has had an important place in our repertoire since the very beginning of the Latvian National Opera. Not only because Riga has left a lasting trace on the creation of this opera, but also because it can captivate both the most ardent Wagner fans, as well as afficionados of Italian opera music for whom Wagner’s work is unfamiliar," says the music director and conductor, Mārtiņš Ozoliņš.

Bēgot no sava laika grūtībām Rīgā, riskantā jūras braucienā jaunajam komponistam radās vīzija par jauniestudējumu, kas iezīmētu viņa sākotnējā stila aizsākumu. Latvijas mūzikas vēsturē  Lidojošais holandietis  atklāja jaunu un nozīmīgu nodaļu – ar 1918. gada iestudējumu Teodora Reitera vadībā Latvju opera .savu darbību uzsāka trupa, kas pārtapa par pašreizējo Latvijas Nacionālo operu un baletu. Un tieši ar šo operu diriģenta Mārtiņa Ozoliņa un režisora ​​Viestura Kairiša interpretācijā Latvijas Nacionālā opera un balets aizsāka savu otro gadsimtu!

“Ričards Vāgners aizbēga no sarežģītas finansiālās situācijas Rīgā un iestrēga laikā, mūžībā. Toreiz viņš aizbēga vispirms pa sauszemi, pēc tam uz kuģa. Varbūt šodien viņš bēgtu ar lidmašīnu. Viņš piedzīvoja vētru, taču jāšaubās, vai gaisa kabatas viņam būtu patikušas labāk. Un tad viņš ieraudzīja atspulgu. Sākumā šķita, ka tas ir spoku kuģis, kuru stūrējis miris kapteinis, bet, tuvāk ieskatoties, Vāgners atpazina sevi mūžīgi klīstošajā, nelaimīgajā piedzīvojumu meklētājā, kurš nevar rast mieru,” stāsta iestudējuma režisors Viesturs Kairišs.

"Operai Der fliegende Holländer ir nozīmīga vieta mūsu repertuārā jau kopš pašiem Latvijas Nacionālās operas pirmsākumiem. Ne tikai tāpēc, ka Rīga ir atstājusi paliekošas pēdas šīs operas tapšanā, bet arī tāpēc, ka tā spēj aizraut gan pašus dedzīgākos. Vāgnera fani, kā arī itāļu opermūzikas cienītāji, kuriem Vāgnera daiļrade ir sveša,” stāsta mūzikas vadītājs un diriģents Mārtiņš Ozoliņš.
