************ Der Standard, 09.10.2020, Ljubiša Tošić From the jukebox of fears The fourth world premiere of the siren opera festival "The Improvement of the World" leads to a little house in the alpine Somewhere. The hunter and wife dance around the little hut in which the father, mother, son and blind daughter are put into moral unrest. The visit of the help-seeking Gharib plunges the household into a dilemma between mercy and compliance with strict alien laws, which become an obsession for the son (Bernd Fröhlich), who climbs into populist slogans. The direction by Kristine Tornquist emphasizes the latent lack of empathy towards the newcomer through puppet-like design of the characters. Only the daughter (Johanna Krokovay) and the refugee (Johannes Schwendinger) have human features. The initially benevolent father (John Sweeney) is, however, rigidly fickle. And the mother (Romana Amerling) turns in a barbeque manner after initial sympathy against the intruder. Complexity can be found above all in the music, which the Ensemble Phace (conductor François-Pierre Descamps) delicately implements: the father sounds like the Magic Flute Sarastro, the mother indulges in Belkante coloratura. However, composer Gerhard E. Winkler also knows how to express the atmosphere of fear through free tonal, percussive structures. The music encourages you to indulge in a guessing game, such as tango, Bach, early jazz and songs like Ain't Misbehavin 'or Over the Rainbow to discover. The music, however, is not a musical history jukebox set in a score. She is a dense, dramatically refined, Stylish work that carries over the all too self-evident of the libretto - right to the end. Gharib starts a tune that Winkler wrote on the basis of an Arabic scale (maqam). The melancholy of a wanderer into the unknown can be heard - as the most haunting episode of the piece.
