René Graf von Luxemburg loves the fun life and spends more money than he has. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of Parisian carnival, he receives an irresistible offer: he is to marry a stranger for a huge sum, without the two even seeing each other. After three months, the marriage is divorced again so that the newly crowned countess can marry a prince without disturbing class differences. The plan seems to be working – until the young couple accidentally get to know each other before the divorce...
As in the Merry Widow, which was made shortly before, numerous secrets have to be revealed and misunderstandings clarified before everything comes to a happy ending. And Lehár once again created music that can be just as brilliant as it is soulful.

René Graf von Luxemburg liebt das lustige Leben und gibt mehr Geld aus als er hat. Mitten im Pariser Karnevalstrubel erhält er ein unwiderstehliches Angebot: Für eine Riesensumme soll er eine Unbekannte heiraten, ohne dass sich die beiden überhaupt zu Gesicht bekommen. Nach drei Monaten wird die Ehe wieder geschieden, damit die frischgebackene Gräfin ohne störende Standesunterschiede einen Fürsten ehelichen kann. Der Plan scheint zu funktionieren – bis sich die jungen Eheleute vor der Scheidung zufällig doch kennenlernen …
Wie in der kurz zuvor entstandenen Lustigen Witwe müssen zahlreiche Geheimnisse gelüftet und Missverständnisse geklärt werden, bis alles zu einem guten Ende kommt. Und Lehár schuf dazu wieder eine Musik, die ebenso brillant wie gefühlvoll sein kann.
