On the day of his wedding, young Edmond Dantès falls victim to an intrigue of powerful enemies. While everyone - including his bride Mercédès - assumes that he has died, he languishes in a dungeon for many years. A fellow prisoner, Abbé Faria, becomes his teacher, prepares his escape with him and, shortly before his death, reveals to him the hiding place of a huge fortune.
Dantès returns to the world as the infinitely rich Count of Monte Cristo: His only purpose in life now seems to be revenge on his former adversaries, who destroyed his happiness in life. Nobody recognizes him - except Mercédès, who married one of the schemers.
An adventure story, a love story, a lonely island, carnival in Rome, a pirate ship and Parisian salons: the settings are just as exciting and varied as the plot. After Jekyll & Hyde, another piece of popular world literature - Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel first appeared in 1844-1846 as a serial novel - in a thrilling musical version by Frank Wildhorn!
