The harlequin, personification of life, and death philosophize about the world. Times of war are hard when men don't laugh and death doesn't cause terror. When the drummer announces the war of all against all and proclaims himself the ruler of life and death, the emperor of Atlantis refuses to serve. nobody dies On a battlefield, a soldier and an armed woman discover affection and love for each other - "Look: the world is bright and colorful!" A revolt breaks out. Counting bombs drives the Emperor insane. Death appears and agrees to resume his office. However, he has one condition: the emperor as the first victim.

The Emperor of Atlantis was created in 1943-1944 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp for a chamber ensemble founded there. The opera is being rehearsed, the premiere is forbidden. In autumn 1944 Viktor Ullmann, his librettist Peter Kien and a large part of the ensemble were deported to Auschwitz. Ullmann can hand over all compositions created in the camp to a fellow inmate beforehand. In its parable of the futility of war, Atlantis is more than a mystical legend. Through direct musical quotations and references to jazz and light music, the opera itself becomes a political commentator in the tradition of the 1920s and remains a piece of the hour to this day.

Der Harlekin, Personifizierung des Lebens, und der Tod philosophieren über die Welt. Zeiten des Krieges sind schwer, wenn Menschen nicht lachen und Tode keine Schrecken verursachen. Als der Kaiser von Atlantis durch den Trommler den Krieg aller gegen alle verkünden und sich zum Herrscher über Leben und Tod ausrufen lässt, verweigert der Tod den Dienst. Niemand stirbt. Auf einem Schlachtfeld entdecken ein Soldat und eine bewaffnete Frau Zuneigung und Liebe füreinander – «Schau: Die Welt ist hell und bunt!» Eine Revolte bricht aus. Beim Zählen von Bomben wird der Kaiser wahnsinnig. Der Tod erscheint und willigt ein, seines Amtes wieder zu walten. Er hat allerdings eine Bedingung: den Kaiser als erstes Opfer.

Der Kaiser von Atlantis entsteht 1943-1944 im KZ Theresienstadt für ein dort gegründetes Kammerensemble. Die Oper wurde geprobt, zur Uraufführung in Theresienstadt kam es jedoch nicht mehr. Im Herbst 1944 werden Viktor Ullmann, sein Librettist Peter Kien und ein Großteil des Ensembles nach Auschwitz deportiert. Sämtliche im Lager entstandene Kompositionen kann Ullmann vorher einem Mithäftling überreichen. In seiner Parabel auf die Sinnlosigkeit von Krieg ist Atlantis mehr als eine mystische Legende. Durch direkte musikalische Zitate und Bezüge zu Jazz und Unterhaltungsmusik wird die Oper selbst zum politischen Kommentator in der Tradition der 1920er Jahre und bleibt bis heute ein Stück der Stunde.
