Using pre-premiere drama  to create an opera, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart did it! In the brilliant comedy Der Schauspieldirektor, the composer ridicules the opera world. Everything comes along, from rival singers, big egos and hectic rehearsals to arguments on stage. 

Mozart was able to draw abundantly from his own experiences for Der Schauspieldirektor , as did director, author and opera singer Christopher Gillett. He wrote the new play text and directs Der Schauspieldirektor at Opera Zuid, with a wealth of hilarious experiences in mind. 'Opera bounces back and forth between the ridiculous and the sublime and in this piece I want to poke fun at the ridiculous.' All-rounder Gillett thus gives a look behind the stage curtains and follows Mozart in his loving satire about the opera company. A tip of the veil; 'The curtain rises on a beautiful seventeenth-century Dutch merchant's house in the early nineteenth century. What happens next…I'll keep that a secret for now, because that's part of the fun.'

Together with conductor Enrico Delamboye, a top cast, including Sir Thomas Allen, and the South Netherlands Philharmonic, Gillet brings out the sparkling lightness of this funny and inventive score. And of course Mozart's fantastic music is central! "Actually, it's a kind of adoration of Mozart, in the middle of all the craziness." The comedy with music, as Mozart himself called the work, shows his genius on both the dramatic and psychological level with theatrical style.

‘Ook opera-nieuwkomers zullen dit leuk vinden’

Het drama vóórafgaande aan een première gebruiken om een opera te maken, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart deed het! In de briljante komedie Der Schauspieldirektor neemt de componist de operawereld op de hak. Alles komt voorbij, van rivaliserende zangers, grote ego’s en hectische repetities tot ruzie op de bühne. 

Mozart kon voor Der Schauspieldirektor rijkelijk uit zijn eigen ervaringen putten en dat geldt ook voor regisseur, auteur én operazanger Christopher Gillett. Hij schreef de nieuwe toneeltekst en regisseert Der Schauspieldirektor bij Opera Zuid, met in zijn achterhoofd een schat aan hilarische ervaringen. ‘Opera stuitert heen en weer tussen belachelijk en subliem en in dit stuk wil ik de draak steken met het belachelijke.’ Alleskunner Gillett geeft dus een kijkje achter de toneelgordijnen en volgt Mozart op in zijn liefdevolle satire over het operabedrijf. Een tipje van de sluier; ‘Het doek gaat op voor een prachtig, zeventiende-eeuws, Hollands koopmanshuis in het begin van de negentiende eeuw. Wat er daarna gebeurt…dat hou ik nog even geheim, want dat is deel van de lol.’

Samen met dirigent Enrico Delamboye, een topcast, waaronder Sir Thomas Allen, en philharmonie zuidnederland haalt Gillet de sprankelende lichtvoetigheid van deze grappige en inventieve partituur naar boven. En natuurlijk staat Mozarts fantastische muziek centraal! ‘Eigenlijk is het een soort adoratie van Mozart, te midden van alle gekkigheid.’ De komedie met muziek zoals Mozart het werk zelf noemde, toont met theatrale stijl zijn genie op zowel dramatisch als psychologisch vlak.
