Happy Birthday! In 2022, the Cologne Opera will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Alexander Zemlinsky's opera "The Dwarf". At that time, the one-act play was combined with Stravinsky's character ballet "Petrushka". Now both works are on the program together again. For "Petruschka" the Cologne Opera will be working for the first time with the choreographer Richard Siegal and his company  Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference at the Cologne Theater .

In the play "The Dwarf" everything revolves around an anniversary, because Princess Donna Clara is celebrating her 18th birthday. The most exciting gift is a live dwarf, who enchants everyone with his singing. He immediately falls in love with the beautiful princess, who, however, plays a cruel game with him. But the dwarf doesn't know about his own ugliness. Seeing himself in the mirror, he collapses dead in despair at his deformity.

In "Petruschka" we are again shown the social mechanisms of exclusion and humiliation: at a fair, a magician brings his puppets to life, including Petrushka, who suffers from the magician and his own ugliness. Only his love for the ballerina gives him comfort. But she rejects the injured Petrushka and a game of love and jealousy unfolds that ends fatally.

Director Paul-Georg Dittrich and choreographer Richard Siegal show the protagonists as a link between the past and the present, as world walkers between 1922 and 2022. The viewers sometimes become party guests or visitors to the fair and are given the opportunity to take part in the action up close.
