During the French Revolution, the sisters of the Carmel of Compiègne are threatened and promised to the guillotine. The young nun, Blanche de la Force, witnesses in terror the anguished agony of the Mother Superior. When the revolutionaries invade the convent, she manages to flee but transfigured by her faith, she joins her sisters, and freed from her fear, she joins them at the scaffold.

In March 1953, the director of Editions Ricordi suggested that Francis Poulenc put Bernanos' play, Dialogues des Carmélites , to music . The composer, animated by a deep faith, throws himself with passion into the realization of this opera based on a real historical fact, when, following the French Revolution, the religious orders were persecuted. He is literally obsessed with Blanche's complex relationships with death and he relates them to his own existential questions. Deeply human, between sacred and profane, exploring conscience and the relationship to religion, Poulenc's masterpiece offers us an initiatory journey towards grace.

After a premiere in Italian in Milan in 1957, before its definitive version a few months later, Dialogues des Carmélites is
an essential milestone in French opera. He whom the critics called Monk or Voyou , for the astonishing contrast which animates the spirit of his works, here touches on the absolute by the genius of his French prosody and the dramatic intensity carried by sublime music.

Pendant la Révolution française, les sœurs du Carmel de Compiègne sont menacées et promises à la guillotine. La jeune nonne, Blanche de la Force, assiste terrorisée à l’agonie angoissée de la Mère supérieure. Lorsque les révolutionnaires envahissent le couvent, elle parvient à s’enfuir mais transfigurée par sa foi, elle rejoint ses sœurs, et libérée de sa peur, elle les rejoint à l’échafaud.

En mars 1953, le directeur des éditions Ricordi suggère à Francis Poulenc la mise en musique de la pièce de Bernanos, Dialogues des Carmélites. Le compositeur, animé d’une foi profonde se jette avec passion dans la réalisation de cet opéra basé sur un fait historique réel, lorsque, à la suite de la Révolution française, les ordres religieux furent persécutés. Il est littéralement obsédé par les rapports complexes de Blanche face à la mort et il les rapporte à ses propres interrogations existentielles. Profondément humain, entre sacré et profane, explorant la conscience et le rapport au religieux, le chef-d’œuvre de Poulenc nous offre un parcours initiatique vers la grâce.

Après une création en italien à Milan en 1957, avant sa version définitive quelques mois plus tard, Dialogues des Carmélites est
un jalon essentiel de l’opéra français. Celui que la critique nommait Moine ou Voyou, pour l’étonnant contraste qui anime l’esprit de ses œuvres, touche ici à l’absolu par le génie de sa prosodie française et l’intensité dramatique portée par une musique sublime.
