Just a moment ago the life of Konstanze and Belmonte seemed to be predictable down to the last: wedding, social prestige, children - consequently a permanent community "until death do you part". But suddenly everything is different. The couple is separated. Konstanze finds herself in the seraglio of Bassa Selim and has to protect herself from the advances of her new master. But it is especially important to arm your heart against the probing question: Could there not be someone other than Belmonte for you? When the longed-for fiancé has finally found her again and the kidnapping from the seraglio is planned, uncertainty breaks through in both of them. Did love survive the breakup? And was it love at all - or just pleasant habit
In his Singspiel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart draws individuals of extraordinarily differentiated emotionality. Konstanze and Belmonte are almost more frightened by the encounter with their own feelings and insecurities than by the real external threats, of which not only the famous "torture aria" bears witness. And despite the high entertainment value - which is of course offered in a Singspiel - the servants Blonde and Pedrillo, the overseer of the seraglio Osmin and of course his master Selim surprise with their complexity. Perhaps its complexity is a reflection of the emotions that Mozart dealt with at the time of composition.

Eben noch schien das Leben von Konstanze und Belmonte bis ins Letzte vorhersehbar zu sein: Hochzeit, gesellschaftliches Ansehen, Kinder – folglich eine beständige Gemeinschaft, »bis dass der Tod euch scheidet«. Doch plötzlich ist alles anders. Das Paar wird getrennt. Konstanze findet sich im Serail des Bassa Selim wieder und muss sich vor den Avancen ihres neuen Gebieters schützen. Ganz besonders gilt es aber, ihr Herz gegen die bohrende Frage zu panzern: Könnte es nicht doch einen anderen Mann als Belmonte für sie geben? Als der herbeigesehnte Verlobte sie dann endlich wiedergefunden hat und die Entführung aus dem Serail geplant wird, bricht in beiden die Verunsicherung durch. Hat die Liebe die Trennung überstanden? Und war es überhaupt Liebe – oder nur angenehme Gewohnheit?

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart zeichnet in seinem Singspiel Individuen von außergewöhnlich differenzierter Emotionalität. Konstanze und Belmonte werden durch die Begegnung mit ihren eigenen Gefühlen und Unsicherheiten fast mehr geängstigt als durch die realen äußeren Bedrohungen, wovon nicht nur die berühmte »Marternarie« Zeugnis ablegt. Und trotz des – bei einem Singspiel natürlich gebotenen – hohen Unterhaltungswerts überraschen auch das Dienerpaar Blonde und Pedrillo, der Aufseher des Serails Osmin und natürlich sein Gebieter Selim durch ihre Vielschichtigkeit. Vielleicht ist ihre Komplexität ein Widerschein der Emotionen, mit denen Mozart sich zur Kompositionszeit auseinandersetzte. Schließlich wollte der 26-jährige Komponist gegen alle Widerstände ebenfalls eine Constanze zum Traualtar führen – was ihm einen halben Monat nach der Uraufführung der Entführung aus dem Serail im Jahr 1782 auch gelang.
