For ages, the dream has been told again and again that man and woman are eternally faithful to each other. Belmonte, a young Spanish nobleman, wants to be rewarded for the suffering he has endured for love. He arrives at the gate of the seraglio. There, a powerful Bassa holds Konstanze, Belmonte's lover, prisoner. The harem guardian Osmin knows a thing or two about building on loyalty. He would like to cut off the heads of the enthusiastic Europeans anyway. It's a good thing that Pedrillo, Belmonte's servant, and Blonde, Konstanze's servant, are already in the seraglio to actually take charge of the intended kidnapping from the Orient. The liberation action is one thing. Quite another are the fluctuating and contradictory feelings of those involved, as soon as the question of fidelity is actually posed as a matter of life and death. The women finally proclaim beyond all doubt: "Long live love." But the kidnapping is foiled. Now it depends on the Pasha to punish or to forgive. The story is on the cutting edge...

Seit Ewigkeiten wird immer wieder neu von dem Traum erzählt, Mann und Frau seien sich ewig treu. Belmonte, ein junger spanischer Adliger, will für das Leid, das er um die Liebe erduldet hat, belohnt werden. Er gelangt vor das Tor des Serails. Dort hält ein mächtiger Bassa Konstanze, die Geliebte Belmontes, gefangen. Der Haremswächter Osmin weiß ein Lied davon zu singen, was es heißt, auf die Treue zu bauen. Den schwärmerischen Europäern würde er ohnehin am liebsten die Köpfe abhauen. Gut, dass sich Pedrillo, Belmontes Diener, und Blonde, Konstanzes Dienerin, bereits im Serail befinden, um die ins Auge gefasste Entführung aus dem Morgenland auch tatsächlich in die Hand zu nehmen. Die Befreiungsaktion ist die eine Sache. Etwas ganz anderes sind die schwankenden und widersprüchlichen Gefühle der Beteiligten, sobald die Frage nach der Treue tatsächlich auf Leben und Tod gestellt wird. Die Frauen verkünden schließlich über alle Zweifel hinweg: „Es lebe die Liebe.“ Doch die Entführung wird vereitelt. Nun hängt es vom Bassa ab, zu strafen oder zu verzeihen. Die Geschichte steht auf des Messers Schneide…
