century and a half ago, Johann Strauss, who was in the prime of his creative powers, began work on his second operetta. Its plot was a combination of the German farce "Imprisonment" and the French vaudeville "New Year's Eve". Strauss liked the libretto - funny, witty, sparkling! The score was written in just six weeks. It was edited several times, and in the latest version, the procession of "The Bat" around the world became truly triumphant, crowning the century of the Viennese operetta.
For the Opera and Ballet Theater of Udmurtia, The Bat is a landmark performance: it became the first operetta staged at the new theater in 1959, in its second year of existence. Three decades later, already in the 90s, the premiere of the updated version took place - and the audience again, as in the days of Strauss, applauded the brilliant dance operetta, before the charm of which it was impossible to resist!
The new "The Bat" directed by Nikolai Markelov is a real classical musical performance without a single cut, moreover, it includes several more Strauss waltzes. Historical costumes, an abundance of musical numbers, a cascade of dances and crowd scenes immerse the audience in the atmosphere of an endless holiday, which the composer himself honored with his presence. The eternal ball, at which the whole of Vienna is spinning, noisy and huge - this is the main character of The Bat!
