This operetta of all operettas is set ‘in a spa near a large city’. It was not difficult for the cognoscenti to identify the large city as Vienna and the spa as Baden, located 25 kilometres south of the capital and the summer residence of Francis I – and also the place where Beethoven spent his summers for 15 years. Nobody likes to be made a laughing stock – and neither does Dr Falke, whose friend Eisenstein surrendered him to the ridicule of early risers in a bat costume after a drunken night.

When Eisenstein is sentenced to eight days in prison for insulting an official, Falke’s moment has come. He lures his friend to Prince Orlofsky’s celebration for one last night of frolics. Along with the increasing bliss caused by waltzing and champagne, there is mounting confusion. Not until the following morning does it become clear: All entanglements were part of the revenge plan. And so, the humiliated Dr Falke seizes the moment to exact the ‘revenge of the bat’. In the end, everyone reconciles and blames it all on his majesty, the champagne.

At first, the Viennese audiences were not sure whether to like the third operetta by their revered Johann Strauß (son) or not. A review in Wiener Fremdenblatt read: “To be sure, there is a great deal of frivolity: When, for instance, a strange man takes off his coat in the presence of the woman he admires and throws on the absent head of the household’s dressing gown, or when a respectable gentleman nestles close to the breast of his Dulcinea to measure her heartbeat with his watch at the masked ball. We think this is more common than piquant.”
