There's nothing like a watertight alibi! Gabriel Eisenstein has to go to prison for insulting officials. Before that, however, Gabriel wants to party wildly without the knowledge of his wife, and what would be a better alibi for a lavish party than a prison sentence to be served? Rosalinde Eisenstein can hardly wait to say goodbye to her husband, because she is finally free to receive her lover Alfred in peace and quiet. The maid Adele also urgently needs an evening off and takes a leave of absence to supposedly look after a sick aunt. Everyone seems to have helped, but the first surprise is not long in coming. As soon as Gabriel is gone and Alfred is there, prison warden Frank comes to pick up the delinquent. What good does it do - Alfred must pretend as if he were Gabriel and tearfully saying goodbye to Rosalinde. Nobody else remains sad that evening, because everyone meets again at Prince Orlofsky's masked ball. Gabriel as "Marquis Renard", Rosalinde as an unknown Hungarian countess and Adele as "artist" Olga. Gabriel is in such a festive mood that he doesn't recognize his wife and falls madly in love with the Hungarian countess. When he appears in prison after a night of drinking, he has to realize that a delinquent of his name is already in there. that he does not recognize his wife and falls madly in love with the Hungarian countess. "Die Fledermaus" is pure golden operetta and at the same time the most charming exposure of bourgeois double standards. We have the waltz king Johann Strauss to thank for the immortal wisdom that of course only the champagne is to blame for everything. At the same time, "Die Fledermaus" unites the most beautiful melodies of the Viennese musical genius: from "Oh dear, oh dear, how does this move me", "My Lord Marquis" to "Sounds of Homeland" and "Im Feuerstrom der Reben". No wonder that this piece of music theater is called the "queen of operettas" and is the most famous work by Johann Strauss alongside the "Gypsy Baron" and "One Night in Venice". At the MiR, "Die Fledermaus" can be experienced in the salon version by Franz Wittenbrink in the small house.
