Selon un sondage dont la presse s’est fait l’écho, 38% des Américains continuent de croire aujourd’hui que la Terre a été créée il y a moins de 10 000 ans dans sa forme actuelle. Un tel chiffre témoigne de la virulence du créationnisme : la représentation du monde que nous tenons pour acquise, basée sur l’observation des faits scientifiques, fait l’objet d’attaques perpétrées par les obscurantistes de tous bords.

Sur un livret inspiré de la Genèse, La Création de Haydn a donné ses lettres de noblesse à l’oratorio allemand. Au retour de Londres où les œuvres de Haendel lui ont fait forte impression, le génial compositeur se sent pousser des ailes et transcende le classicisme dont il est - avec Mozart et Beethoven - le plus illustre représentant. Relatant rien moins que la naissance du monde du chaos à la lumière, l’œuvre fait montre d’une audace harmonique rare.

According to a poll echoed by the press, 38% of Americans today continue to believe that the Earth was created less than 10,000 years ago in its present form. Such a figure testifies to the virulence of creationism : the representation of the world that we take for granted, based on the observation of scientific facts, is the object of attacks perpetrated by obscurantists of all persuasions.

On a libretto inspired by Genesis, The Creation of Haydn gave its letters of nobility to the German oratorio. On his return from London, where the works of Handel made a strong impression on him, the brilliant composer felt his wings grow and transcended the classicism of which he was - along with Mozart and Beethoven - the most illustrious representative. Describing nothing less than the birth of the world from chaos to light, the work displays a rare harmonic audacity.
