Not every institution dares to take this colossus onto the opera stage. The Stuttgart State Opera in 1989 did. Spectacular images in a somber mood paired with overwhelming sound, ranging from timid to mercilessly brutal. It quickly becomes clear why this work is also relevant to music history. Even the first few minutes bear witness to the serialization of all opera parameters and combine spatial and temporal dimensions.
