The magic flute is Mozart's most special opera. On the one hand, the captivating story of two endangered couples in danger, which is pantomime enjoyable and translucent, and on the other hand, an abstract allegory that, apart from Richard Wagner’s oeuvre, has sparked more speculation than any other opera.

The textbook was written by Emanuel Schikaneder, the versatile actor, singer, impresario who was a member of the same Masonic lodge as Mozart (and formerly Haydn). It was this point of connection that led Mozart to help Schikaneder succeed in the Theater auf der Wieden, as his friend was threatened with bankruptcy. They also agreed that a company of singers would be best suited to a Singspiel, for which Schikaneder would write the text, Liebeskind's 1786 Lulu oder Die Zauberflöte(apart from Schikaneder’s theater, at least three other Viennese companies competed to stage better-than-better fairy-tale plays). The plot, like the source text, takes place in magical Egypt, where good-natured princes, demonic queens, evil kidnappers, snakes, and supernatural phenomena clash. In addition, Freemasonry has its roots back here. This is the opera that inspires every creator to create their own Magic Flute universe.
