The Magic Flute So popular is Mozart's Magic Fluteis, it has more to offer than fairy tales, catchy Singspiel lightness and Viennese comedy. Tatjana Gürbaca, the director of our Zurich production, also traces the depths of this enigmatic work, which oscillates between solid suburban theater and philosophical mystery play: the seriousness, the motives for death and the existential questions about being human, without neglecting the humor. She assigns a primitive, wildly anarchic world to the spheres of the Queen of the Night and contrasts this with Sarastro's priestly temple with a realm of clarified power relations and a narrow-minded order. With a lot of scenic imagination, Gürbaca lets these opposites collide, combines pure theater and disguise fun with deeply melancholic scenes and shows the female characters as consistently strong women: the very emancipated queen of the night rebels against ossified male rule. Hungry for life and love, Pamina is self-confidently looking for her own way in life, and the three ladies are bearded pirate brides. In this revival, Ruben Drole is a Papageno that is as weird as it is lovable. Our ensemble member Wenwei Zhang plays his humorless counterpart Sarastro. The French tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac makes his debut as Tamino at the opera house. The Chinese soprano Ying Fang can also be seen at the opera house for the first time as Pamina. Her recent Mozart successes include Ilia (Idomeneo ) at the Met and Susanna ( Le nozze di Figaro ) at the Opera Philadelphia. The American conductor Karina Canellakis at the podium of the Zurich Philharmonia also fits in perfectly with the youthful cast of the Magic Flute .
