The German poet and composer ETA Hoffmann called this work by Mozart the “opera of all operas”, which takes on an archetype of world literature: the irresistible lover who is never rejected, who in the end falls victim to his own arrogance. Florentine Klepper, who most recently staged at the Salzburg Festival and at the opera houses in Frankfurt, Bern and Graz, brings Don Giovanni to the Stadttheater stage. Giedre Šlekyte will be the musical director. Rodion Pogossov, who has made guest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, among others, sings the title role. His lovers do not always surrender as willingly as Don Giovanni claims - at least not Donna Anna: she raises the alarm and in the ensuing riot Don Giovanni becomes her father's murderer. After a series of burlesque entanglements, his tomb statue will take the libertine to hell. The linguistic conciseness and da Ponte's wit complement Mozart's psychologically sophisticated music to create a total work of art of the highest quality that illuminates all dimensions of human existence. The cheerful aspects of Don Giovanni's tricks of seduction, in which his servant Leporello is always at his faithful service, are presented just as impressively as the deep suffering of Donna Elvira, who loves him and constantly fights for his love.
