The universal and timeless suffering of Mary with her dying son illustrated in the Stabat Mater has been an extraordinary source of inspiration throughout the centuries. Dvorák's version is undoubtedly the most moving. Following the dramatic death of his three children, the composer immersed himself body and soul in the writing of this Stabat Mater.
