Hall Alexander Zemlinsky's opera “A Florentine Tragedy” was praised after its premiere in 1917 as a passionate tonal painting that has not existed in this form since Strauss' “Salome”. The opening fanfare immediately pulls the listener into the maelstrom of expressive, colorful sounds. The plot, designed as a drama of jealousy, takes a surprising turn after the master of the house has killed his competitor. Zemlinsky achieved what Puccini had already considered: a gripping composition based on the literary model by Oscar Wilde.
