The carnival and lagoon city of Venice provides the backdrop for this good-mood piece from Vienna's heyday of the “waltz king” and the most famous Viennese par excellence, Johann Strauss. Three old senators with three adventurous women, a charming duke who casts a spell over all women with the seductive rhythm of his gondola song, a loyal barber, a macaroni cook and a desirable fisher girl are the ingredients of an old recipe in which hidden identities behind the colorful Venetian masks cause confusion and in the disguise, entanglements and confusion without end somehow lead to the obligatory "lieto fine" - it's an operetta: "Everyone masks where fun, where madness and lust reign!"
