Empathy for the Devil
"A part of that force that always wants evil..." : With the revival of "Empathy for the Devil", Nico and the Navigators question the usual, purely negative perception and representation of the devilish. The Staged Concert not only examines the causes and origins of evil, but also asks about the necessity of such a construction, without which good would possibly be unthinkable.

“The beginning of a rousing evening has been given: … The ensemble sings and dances as if intoxicated and in between thinks about good and evil. As if possessed by the physical, singers, dancers and actors outdo each other... Evil seduces... Nico and the Navigators lead the viewer through the abyss of the soul and make it clear: The devil, that's us all. The premiere audience enjoys this parade of evil and applauds enthusiastically.”

NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS have developed a production that examines the ambivalent relationship between the supposedly good and the supposedly evil. "Empathy for the Devil" (as a pathetic-ironic salute to the "Sympathy" of the Rolling Stones) addresses the role of that power personified in the devil, which according to Goethe "always wants evil / and always creates good". 

In this staged concert, an almost unmanageable abundance of diabolical material in literature and music was viewed and set in illuminating contrasts. Classic material and pop songs that refer to the diabolical and the attraction of evil are used in their own arrangements. Benjamin Britten meets Jeff Buckley, Peter Tchaikovsky meets David Bowie and Georg Friedrich Handel meets the Beatles. And of course, in addition to Charles Gounod's seductive "Golden Calf", the demonic Samiel from Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" also appears, the anniversary of the premiere of which provided the external occasion for "Empathy for the Devil".

In view of the current world situation, it goes without saying that, in addition to private contracts with the devil and his deadly sins, there will also be political alliances and end-time prophecies. .

„Ein Teil von jener Kraft, die stets das Böse will…“: Mit der Wiederaufnahme von „Empathy for the Devil“ hinterfragen Nico and the Navigators die übliche, rein negative Wahrnehmung und Darstellung des Teuflischen. Das Staged Concert untersucht nicht nur Ursachen und Ursprung des Bösen, sondern fragt nach der Notwendigkeit einer solchen Konstruktion, ohne die das Gute womöglich undenkbar wäre.

„Der Auftakt für einen mitreißenden Abend ist gegeben: … Das Ensemble singt und tanzt wie im Rausch und denkt zwischendurch über das Gut und Böse nach. Als seien sie vom Leibhaftigen besessen, überbieten sich Sänger, Tänzer und Schauspieler … Das Böse verführt … Nico and the Navigators führen den Zuschauer durch seelische Abgründe und machen klar: Der Teufel, das sind wir alle. Das Premierenpublikum findet Gefallen an dieser Parade des Bösen und applaudiert begeistert.“

NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS haben eine Inszenierung entwickelt, die das ambivalente Verhältnis des vermeintlich Guten zum mutmaßlich Bösen in den Blick nimmt. Mit „Empathy for the Devil“ wird (als pathetisch-ironischer Gruß an die „Sympathy“ der Rolling Stones) die Rolle jener im Teufel personifizierten Kraft thematisiert, die laut Goethe „stets das Böse will / und stets das Gute schafft“. 

In diesem Staged Concert wurde dafür eine schier unüberschaubare Fülle an diabolischem Material in Literatur und Musik gesichtet sowie in erhellende Kontraste gesetzt. Klassisches Material und Popsongs, die auf das Diabolische und die Attraktion des Bösen Bezug nehmen, werden in eigenen Arrangements verarbeitet. Benjamin Britten trifft dabei auf Jeff Buckley, Peter Tschaikowski auf David Bowie und Georg Friedrich Händel auf die Beatles. Und natürlich erscheint neben Charles Gounods verführerischem „Goldenen Kalb“ auch der dämonische Samiel aus Carl Maria von Webers Oper „Der Freischütz“, deren Uraufführungs-Jubiläum den äußeren Anlass für „Empathy for the Devil“ bot. Im Laufe der Recherche wurden viele Facetten des Bösen freigelegt und im fremden Antlitz wie im eigenen Spiegelbild entdeckt – nicht zuletzt in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rutger Bregmans optimistischem Credo „Im Grunde gut“.

Dass es dabei neben privaten Kontrakten mit dem Teufel und seinen Todsünden auch um politische Bündnisse und Endzeit-Prophezeiungen gehen wird, versteht sich angesichts der aktuellen Weltlage von selbst.
