Ernani by Giuseppe Verdi The opera genius Giuseppe Verdi set his own accents right from the start of his career. This can be seen clearly in his early work »Ernani«, which premiered in Venice in 1844. The original came from a »wild youngster« in French literature: in Victor Hugo's scandal-ridden »Hernani«, a young generation finds its own language – the extreme, the exaggerated interests them more than the heroes of traditional tragedy. And this Ernani is indeed an extreme character: in order to avenge his murdered father, he risks his own life and, trapped in abstruse and inhuman concepts of honor and morality, finds no rest in his love for the beautiful Elvira.
