In June 2021, within the program linked to the exhibition "Los locos años 20", the Arriaga Theater offered in concert this jewel of Schönberg performed by the impressive soprano Ausrine Stundyte. Now, we recover that show and offer this opera with a very special staging by Calixto Bieito. It should be remembered that Stundyte already amazed Bilbao in 2019 singing in Basque the great Mendi-Mendiyan de Usandizaga, the Arriaga Theater production directed by Bieito himself. And recently, his was considered one of the star performances at the Max Awards gala.

"It's about representing in slow motion everything that happens during a single second of maximum spiritual excitement, lengthening it until it reaches half an hour." This was Arnold Schönberg's own concise description of his opera Erwartung. In the powerful voice of the Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte we will find this Schönberg who is already walking towards dodecaphonism. Atonal and dissonant, but full of expressionist textures and with extraordinary strength. Throughout history many authors have tried to define the music of Erwartung, to portray this work by Schönberg that narrates, or perhaps describes the nocturnal journey of a woman who looks for her lover in a forest in the middle of the night. Phantasmagorical figures intertwining in the gloom, the mantle of night falls on the uncertainty of the protagonist who desperately seeks her lover while the shadow of misfortune hangs over her.
