premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 9, 1893 and at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on April 18, 1894 to a libretto by Arrigo Boito, from The Merry Wives of Windsor and Shakespeare's Henry IV Parts I and II

It was under the influence of Arrigo Boito – an accomplished musician and translator of Shakespeare – that Verdi resumed composing after Aida. The last of the two masterpieces he will produce based on the English genius is Falstaff . With a twilight comedy and a staggering musical inventiveness, this ultimate opera is offered to the public in 1893. Laurent Pelly gives this comedy an exceptional earthiness, and the title role will be interpreted by Laurent Naouri.
