The Theater Pforzheim is making a guest appearance in Fürth with Verdi's last opera "Falstaff", which is based on Shakespeare's comedy "The Merry Wives of Windsor". At the age of almost 80, Giuseppe Verdi, who had long since become a living legend in 1893, achieved another sensational success. "Falstaff" was definitely his last stage work, with which he composed his only masterpiece of comic opera after previously exclusively tragic operatic material. Although Otto Nicolai had already created a German opera based on the same original 44 years earlier, Verdi, drawing on his brilliant librettist Arrigo Boito, chose a different, abysmal approach to Shakespeare's comedy. The demeanor of the aging Sir John Falstaff - sly rascal, Bon vivant and wannabe womanizer - causes a stir in bourgeois Windsor. Not only does he swindle his living at the expense of others: the self-doubting man of pleasure also believes that he can make advances to two women with identical love letters. The outraged but witty women do not put up with this and strike back ... With a passion for caricature, but also characterizing in the most precise way, the old Verdi with his "Falstaff" found a very natural and pictorial musical language full of wit, rhythmic refinements and tonal associations.
