From an early age Charles Gounod was attracted to Goethe's »Faust«. For his opera composition, however, he was only interested in the love story between Faust and Margarethe and the figure of Mephisto, who he saw as the embodiment of everything evil and terrible. Thanks to Gounod's skilful staging, impressive images follow one another, forming a perfect balance between dramatic climaxes and lyrical passages. After its premiere in Paris in 1859, »Faust« soon became a worldwide success. The work has been performed nearly 3,000 times at the Opéra National de Paris. Schon in jungen Jahren fühlte sich Charles Gounod von Goethes „Faust“ angezogen. Für seine Opern-Komposition interessierte ihn jedoch nur die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Faust und Margarethe sowie die Figur des Mephisto, der für ihn als Verkörperung alles Bösen und Schrecklichen erschien. Dank Gounods geschickter Szenenführung reihen sich beeindruckende Bilder aneinander, die eine perfekte Balance zwischen dramatischen Höhepunkten und lyrischen Passagen bilden. Nach der Uraufführung im Jahr 1859 in Paris entwickelte sich „Faust“ bald zu einem Welterfolg. An der Opéra National de Paris wurde das Werk bis heute nahezu 3000 Mal aufgeführt.
