LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Fidelio Opera in two acts Libretto by Joseph Sonnleithner and Georg Friedrich Treitschke Fidelio is the only theatrical work by Ludwig van Beethoven. As often happens in his work, the drafting was not an easy thing. The genius of Bonn, in fact, produced three versions quite different from each other. Today we tend to prefer the first - in three acts and with the title Leonore - and the third - reduced to two acts -. The work, performed for the first time in Vienna in 1805, did not meet the public's favor and Beethoven was forced to withdraw it. Rather than the undisputed quality of the Fidelio, a work to which the composer was very fond, the climate of tension that hovered in Vienna played against it: the Napoleonic troops had occupied the city and the spectators were mostly French soldiers. The story takes place in Seville, where Leonora arrives in the guise of Fidelio, to free her husband Florestano, captured and taken prisoner by her personal enemy, Don Pizarro. With the help of the jailer, Rocco, and her daughter, Marcellina, Leonora will succeed in this difficult undertaking. He was a composer and pianist, a crucial figure in Western cultured music, he was the last notable representative of Viennese classicism and is considered one of the greatest and most influential composers of all time.
