“Un’antologia di undici canti popolari (o assunti come tali) di varia origine (Stati Uniti, Armenia, Provenza, Sicilia, Sardegna, ecc.), trovati su vecchi dischi, su antologie stampate o raccolti dalla viva voce di amici”: sono i Folk Songs, che Berio scrive in “omaggio all’intelligenza vocale di Cathy Berberian”. È il 1964, e i sette esecutori cui sono destinati accompagnano appunto la voce della grande musicista scomparsa quarant’anni fa. Per ricordarla, una nuova commissione a Ivan Fedele ispirata alle immagini evocate in testi poetici tanka giapponesi; e, di Fabio Nieder che di Berio è stato allievo, una trasposizione di un Preludio di Debussy che dall’Anacapri trasfigurata pianisticamente conduce attraverso i diversi timbri strumentali dell’Icarus Ensemble a indagare nuovi mondi sonori.

“An anthology of eleven folk songs (or supposed folk songs) of various origins (United States, Armenia, Provence, Sicily, Sardinia, etc.), chosen from old recordings, printed anthologies or heard from the voices of friends”: these are the Folk Songs that Berio wrote as a “tribute to the vocal intelligence of Cathy Berberian”. It was 1964, and they were scored for seven instruments and the voice of the great Berberian, who died forty years ago. In her memory, a new work has been commissioned from Ivan Fedele, inspired by the images of Japanese tankapoetry. The programme also includes one of Debussy’s preludes in a transposition by Fabio Nieder. The various instrumental timbres of the Icarus Ensemble will take us from Debussy’s pianistically transfigured Anacapri to new worlds of sound.
