100 years of Cathy Berberian and Luciano Berio: a tragicomic tribute to the power couple of the twentieth-century musical avant-garde 
Cathy Berberian was a unique artist who spent her entire life shaking up the conventions of classical music. With her supple, expressive voice, the American mezzo-soprano pushed vocal boundaries and was an inspiration to some of the greatest composers of the twentieth century: John Cage, Igor Stravinsky and, first and foremost, her then husband Luciano Berio. In 2025, these two giants would have turned 100: the perfect occasion for a tribute to this power couple of the avant-garde! 

The starting point is Berio’s eccentric Recital I (for Cathy), in which a singer takes the stage for a lied programme, only to find that her pianist hasn’t arrived! This is the start of a brilliant musical collage in tragicomic style with quotes and paraphrases from, among others, Claudio Monteverdi, Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Sarah Aristidou, a rising star in the firmament of contemporary opera, will perform this work with the musicians of the Spectra Ensemble – if they show up, that is – and delve further into the oeuvre of Berio and Berberian, including the Folk Songs and the funny Stripsody, based on the typical onomatopoeia from comics.

Cathy Berberian et Luciano Berio auraient eu 100 ans en 2025 : hommage au couple emblématique de l’avant-garde musicale du XXe siècle 
Artiste singulière, Cathy Berberian a, sa vie durant, bousculé les conventions de la musique classique. Avec sa voix souple et expressive, la mezzo-soprano américaine a repoussé les limites vocales et inspiré quelques-uns des plus grands compositeurs du XXe siècle : John Cage, Igor Stravinsky et, avant tout, son mari de l’époque, Luciano Berio. Ces deux géants auraient eu cent ans en 2025. L’occasion rêvée de rendre hommage à ce couple emblématique de l’avant-garde ! 

La soirée s’ouvre sur l’excentrique Recital I: for Cathy de Berio, dans lequel une chanteuse monte sur scène pour donner un récital et découvre que son pianiste n’est pas encore arrivé. Tel est le préambule d’un brillant collage musical tragi-comique, citant et paraphrasant Claudio Monteverdi, Richard Wagner ou encore Arnold Schönberg, donné ici par Sarah Aristidou et les musiciens de l’Ensemble Spectra – si du moins ils arrivent ! L’étoile montante de l’opéra contemporain poursuivra son exploration de l’univers de Berio et Berberian en interprétant notamment les Folk Songs et Stripsody, hilarant chapelet d’onomatopées tirées du monde de la bande dessinée.

Cathy Berberian was een eigenzinnige artieste die haar hele leven lang de conventies van de klassieke muziek door elkaar heeft geschud. Met haar soepele, expressieve stem verlegde de Amerikaanse mezzosopraan vocale grenzen en was ze een inspiratiebron voor enkele van de grootste componisten uit de 20ste eeuw: John Cage, Igor Stravinsky en in de eerste plaats haar toenmalige echtgenoot Luciano Berio. In 2025 zouden beide grootheden honderd jaar oud zijn geworden: de perfecte gelegenheid voor een hommage aan dit powerkoppel van de avant-garde! 

Uitgangspunt vormt Berio’s excentrieke Recital I: for Cathy, waarin een zangeres het podium betreedt voor een liedprogramma, om vast te stellen dat haar pianist er nog niet is. Het is het begin van een briljante muzikale collage in tragikomische stijl met citaten en parafrases van onder meer Claudio Monteverdi, Richard Wagner en Arnold Schönberg. Sarah Aristidou, rijzende ster aan het firmament van de hedendaagse opera, brengt dit werk samen met de muzikanten van het Spectra Ensemble – als ze tenminste komen opdagen – en grasduint verder in het œuvre van Berio en Berberian met onder meer de Folk Songs en het grappige Stripsody, gebaseerd op de typische onomatopeeën uit comics.
