One of the greatest love stories in world literature is told in Dante's "Divine Comedy": Francesca is the wife of the warrior Lanceotto Malatesta. However, she loves his younger brother Paolo, to whom she has sworn eternal loyalty. Lanceotto sets a trap for the lovers and eventually stabs them both. On their way through hell, Dante and the spirit of Virgil meet the "damned souls" of Paolo and Francesca and listen to their song. In Sergei Rachmaninoff's one-act opera »Francesca da Rimini«, the story of the two lovers is told in the form of a flashback, framed by a prologue and an epilogue in hell. In Rachmaninoff's work, the orchestra in particular becomes a late-Romantic medium for speaking of the unspeakable. With "Francesca da Rimini" the tradition of concert opera performances at the NTM is continued and after the enthusiastically received production of Tchaikovsky's "Iolanthe" the thread of the Slavic-Russian repertoire is continued in the repertoire.
