The director Phia Ménard takes over the moving and magnetic work of Cocteau and Glass.
We know Philip Glass's fascination with Cocteau since he has already adapted Orpheus and Beauty and the Beast. For Les Enfants terribles, he created a chamber opera with three pianos which perfectly conveys the atmosphere of Cocteau's novel. In her staging, Phia Ménard wants to bring the show into a fair equation between singing, music, choreography and acting. The stage is, she says, the place of transformation. The imagination, the dreams, the treasure and the destiny of Paul and Elisabeth await us there. In their childhood room, left to their own devices, Paul and his sister Élisabeth, ruled by their fantasies, transform their room into a permanent stage and endlessly play the comedy of childhood there, accompanied by their friend, Gérard. La metteuse en scène Phia Ménard s’empare de l’œuvre bouleversante et magnétique de Cocteau et Glass.
On connait la fascination de Philip Glass pour Cocteau puisqu’il a déjà̀ adapté Orphée et La Belle et la Bête. Pour Les Enfants terribles, il crée un opéra de chambre avec trois pianos qui traduit parfaitement l’atmosphère du roman de Cocteau. Dans sa mise en scène, Phia Ménard souhaite amener le spectacle dans une équation juste entre chant, musique, chorégraphie et jeu. Le plateau est, dit-elle, l’endroit de la transformation. L’imagination, les rêves, le trésor et le destin de Paul et d’Élisabeth nous y attendent. Dans leur chambre d’enfance, livrés à eux-mêmes, Paul et sa sœur Élisabeth, gouvernes par leurs fantaisies, transforment leur chambre en scène permanente et y jouent indéfiniment la comédie de l’enfance accompagnés de leur ami, Gérard. Une comédie à peine troublée par la mort de leur mère (invisible), qui les laisse libre de nier le monde réel, le monde des adultes et de la raison, et qui semble ne jamais devoir les rattraper…
