At the end of Siegfried, Siegfried and Brünnhilde were the ideal lovers who could have the strength to renounce power and possessions and to reconcile the world and people through love. If Richard Wagner had concluded his Ring of the Nibelung with Siegfried , the parable about the destructive power of money at the expense of humanity and love would have ended happily. But Wagner conceived his Nibelungen poem from, of all places, Siegfried's death , the original title of the later Götterdämmerung. The political events and social upheavals of his time prompted him to add prehistory to the material and thus to compose a unique magnum opus, his Ring des Nibelungen .

In Götterdämmerung , what has come to a head for the ring, the ultimate symbol of power, since Alberich's curse in the Rheingoldadherent: it brings death to all who possess it and ultimately leads to the downfall of an entire empire. Siegfried, the fearless hero, unlike his father Siegmund now free of Wotan's will, is not aware of the responsibility for Brünnhilde's pledge of love. Manipulated by Alberich's son Hagen, Siegfried frivolously gambled away the ring, his great love and every chance of reparation and salvation of the world that had fallen apart. Only Brünnhilde, matured through love and painful experience, survived the downfall of the power-eaten, elitist, decadent and brutal social system. Through them there is the possibility of hope for a future.

In just one year, the Chemnitz Opera completed the Ring of the Nibelung, newly staged by four women directors, with Götterdämmerung . Elisabeth Stöppler has worked at the Hamburg State Opera, the Hanover State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera and the Semperoper Dresden. For her Peter Grimes , which was realized in Gelsenkirchen , she received the Götz-Friedrich-Preis and the Förderpreis NRW. Since the 2014/2015 season she has been in-house director at the Mainz State Theater.

Elisabeth Stöppler was awarded the DER FAUST 2019 theater prize for her production of Götterdämmerung in Chemnitz .
