At the end of the second day of Richard Wagner's world-spanning stage festival, Siegfried and Brünnhilde had jubilantly sung their love, and for a moment it seemed as if the utopia of a world completely determined by love and free of power struggles could become reality. But already at the beginning of the third and last day, the Norns announce: «Eternal knowledge is at an end» – the terrible end is near. Siegfried will soon leave Brünnhilde, whom he loves after all, to set out on new deeds; he will meet Hagen, the hate-filled nightmare Alberich's son, who uses him for his cynical plans for domination. Using Siegfried is easy, because Siegfried knows nothing of the power of the ring, which he had given to Brünnhilde as a token of love. Hagen, on the other hand, is in possession of this knowledge; Driven by the greed for power and dominance, he spins his intrigues almost unhindered. But not only Siegfried falls victim to Hagen. In 1849, under the impression of the revolution, Richard Wagner had begun the text and composition of the Ring des Nibelungen in Zurich; 26 years later and after a 12-year break in the middle of Siegfried , he was finally able to complete his main work and premiere it at the newly founded Bayreuth Festival. Twilight of the Gods
Am Ende des zweiten Tages von Richard Wagners weltumspannendem Bühnenfestspiel hatten Siegfried und Brünnhilde jubelnd ihre Liebe besungen, und für einen Moment schien es, als könne die Utopie einer ganz von Liebe bestimmten, von Machtkämpfen freien Welt Wirklichkeit werden. Doch schon zu Beginn des dritten und letzten Tags kündigen die Nornen es an: «Zu End’ ist ewiges Wissen» – das schreckliche Ende naht. Siegfried wird Brünnhilde, die er doch liebt, schon bald verlassen, um zu neuen Taten aufzubrechen; er wird auf Hagen treffen, des hasserfüllten Nachtalben Alberichs Sohn, der ihn für seine zynischen Herrschaftspläne benutzt. Siegfried zu benutzen, ist ein leichtes, denn Siegfried weiss nichts von der Macht des Rings, den er Brünnhilde als Liebespfand überlassen hatte. Hagen dagegen ist im Besitz dieses Wissens; von der Gier nach Macht und Herrschaft getrieben, spinnt er fast ungehindert seine Intrigen. Aber nicht nur Siegfried wird Hagens Opfer. Auch Brünnhilde muss schrecklichen Verrat erdulden und erlebt furchtbare Erniedrigung und grenzenlosen Schmerz. Siegfrieds Tod führt schliesslich zum Untergang der alten Welt – der Fluch des Rings hat nichts von seiner Kraft eingebüsst: Als sie das ganze Ausmass des Betrugs begreift, gibt Brünnhilde den Rheintöchtern den Ring zurück und wählt für sich selbst den Tod. Die Götter gehen unter, die Natur holt sich zurück, was ihr gehört. Doch neben Zerstörung und Untergang ist auch Platz für Hoffnung: Erstmals erklingt am Schluss der Götterdämmerung das sogenannte Erlösungsmotiv wieder, mit dem Brünnhilde in der Walküre Sieglinde ihren Sohn Siegfried angekündigt hatte.
1849 hatte Richard Wagner unter dem Eindruck der Revolution mit Text und Komposition des Ring des Nibelungen in Zürich begonnen; 26 Jahre später und nach einer 12-jährigen Unterbrechung mitten im Siegfried konnte er sein Hauptwerk endlich vollenden und bei den neugegründeten Bayreuther Festspielen uraufführen. Am Opernhaus bringen Intendant und Regisseur Andreas Homoki und Generalmusikdirektor Gianandrea Noseda nun mit der Premiere der Götterdämmerung ihren Zürcher Ring zum Abschluss. Camilla Nylund und Klaus Florian Vogt sind auch in der Götterdämmerung als Siegfried und Brünnhilde zu sehen und geben damit erneut in Zürich wichtige Rollendebüts.
