After "How is the city so deserted that was full of people", Herbert Wernicke's scenes to sacred music by Heinrich Schütz and Matthias Weckmann, his new venture, to stage cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, is also an opera theatre, which sees itself as a moral institution. The Schütz scenes pointed to the wound in all contemporary art: it cannot portray the horrible, the shocking without aestheticizing. But the performance also showed that it is crucial "whether she behaves like make-up on the skin or like balm on the wound" (Christoph Türcke). Where an old Christian virtue, namely that of charity, is translated into the aesthetic, as it were, the shaping of misery can harbor beauty. The mystery of the beauty and depth of Bach's composition may be explained here. His music has fascinated people for almost 300 years. Bach's cantatas, masses and passions have become a treasure trove of suffering for mankind, have become an anthropological tale about the horrors of abandonment, about the misery of finitude, about the terror of faith. "Oh how fleeting, oh how trivial" (BWV 26), "See that your fear of God is not hypocrisy" (BWV 179), "There is nothing healthy about my body" (BWV 25) and "Who knows how close mir mein Ende” (BWV 27) are some of the cantatas that Herbert Wernicke put together for his evening at the theater on the subject of nothingness, appearances and lies in the moral sense.

Choral aus „Wer weiss, wie nahe mir mein Ende“ (BWV 27) Wenn wir Moral begreifen als den Preis moderner Freiheit, sie verstehen als die Zumutung, für sich einzustehen und zugleich Moral begreifen als das Recht, andere an diese Zumutung – an ihre Pflicht zur Verantwortung – zu erinnern, dann beginnt das neue (Opern-)Jahrhundert wie das alte endete. Nach „Wie liegt die Stadt so wüste, die voll Volkes war“, Herbert Wernickes Szenen zu geistlicher Musik von Heinrich Schütz und Matthias Weckmann, ist auch dessen neue Unternehmung, Kantaten von Johann Sebastian Bach szenisch zu erarbeiten, ein Opern-Theater, das sich als moralische Anstalt versteht. Die Schütz-Szenen zeigten auf die Wunde aller zeitgenössischen Kunst: sie kann Entsetzliches, Schockierendes nicht darstellen ohne zu ästhetisieren. Aber die Aufführung zeigte auch, dass es entscheidend darauf ankommt, „ob sie sich dabei verhält wie die Schminke zur Haut oder wie der Balsam zur Wunde“ (Christoph Türcke). Wo eine alte christliche Tugend, nämlich die der Caritas, gleichsam ins Ästhetische übersetzt wird, da kann die Gestaltung des Elends Schönheit bergen. Das Geheimnis der Schönheit und der Tiefe Bach’schen Komponierens findet hierin vielleicht eine Erklärung. Seit fast 300 Jahren zieht seine Musik in ihren Bann. Bachs Kantaten, Messen, Passionen sind zum Leidschatz der Menschheit geronnen, sind zu einer anthropologischen Erzählung geworden über die Schrecken der Verlassenheit, über das Elend der Endlichkeit, über den Terror des Glaubens. „Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig“ (BWV 26), „Sieh zu, dass deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei“ (BWV 179), „Es ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe“ (BWV 25) und „Wer weiss, wie nahe mir mein Ende“ (BWV 27) sind einige der Kantaten, die Herbert Wernicke für seinen Theaterabend über das Thema der Nichtigkeit, des Scheins und der Lüge im moralischen Sinn zusammengestellt hat.
