Grigory Sokolov - Brahms Intermezzo Op. 117 No. 2

De uitvoeringen van Grigory Sokolov hebben iets ongrijpbaar, bijna sacraal. Niet voor niets wordt hij wel eens God aan het klavier genoemd - al zal de pianist daar zelf een pak nederiger over blijven. Zijn sublieme techniek en uitgepuurde directheid, maken elk concert tot een bijzondere belevenis. Dat hij jarenlang geen opnames uitbracht, en je zijn innemend spel dus wel live móést beleven, hielp zeker bij zijn legendarische status. Maar zelfs nu Sokolov enkele jaren geleden bij Deutsche Grammophon tekende en je hem dus ook in het comfort van je eigen huiskamer aan het werk kan horen, kunnen we niet genoeg benadrukken hoe wezenlijk het is om hem over het klavier gebogen aan het werk te zien. Wat hij uit zijn immense repertoirelijst - van de renaissance van William Byrd tot 20ste-eeuwers als Stravinsky en Prokofjev - plukt, houdt hij nog even geheim. Maar met Sokolov aan de toetsen maakt de partituur op de pupiter weinig uit.

Les interprétations de Grigory Sokolov ont quelque chose d'insaisissable, de quasiment sacré. Ce n'est pas sans raison qu'on l'appelle parfois « le dieu du clavier », même si le pianiste lui-même sera nettement plus modeste. Sa technique sublime et l'immédiateté épurée de son jeu font de chacun de ses concerts une expérience extraordinaire. Le fait qu'il n'a sorti aucun enregistrement pendant plusieurs années et qu'il fallait donc assister à ses concerts pour entendre son jeu engageant a certainement contribué à son statut de légende. Mais même depuis que Sokolov a signé chez Deutsche Grammophon il y a quelques années et qu'on peut donc aussi l'écouter confortablement chez soi, le voir à l'œuvre, penché sur son clavier, reste une expérience essentielle. Il n'a pas encore révélé ce qu'il puisera dans son immense répertoire, qui s'étend de la Renaissance de William Byrd aux compositeurs du XXe siècle tels que Stravinski et Prokofiev. Mais quand Sokolov est au clavier, le choix de la partition importe peu…

There is something elusive, almost sacred about Grigory Sokolov’s performances. It is not without reason that he is sometimes described as God at the keyboard - although the pianist himself would be a sight more modest on the subject. His sublime technique and pared-down directness make every concert a special experience. The fact that he did not release any recordings for years, and that you had to experience his engaging playing live, certainly helped with his legendary status. But despite the fact that Sokolov signed with Deutsche Grammophon several years ago and you can now also hear him at work in the comfort of your own living room, we cannot emphasise enough how essential it is to see him live, bent over the keyboard. What he will be plucking from his immense repertoire list - from the Renaissance of William Byrd to 20th-cenutry composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofjev - he’s still keeping a secret for now. But with Sokolov at the keyboard, the score on the music stand makes little difference.
