Sich in eine Geschichte hineinträumen und in eine andere Welt eintauchen – Sofia Gubaidulina war fasziniert von dem tschechischen Märchen »Die kleine Kreide«, das ihr so symbolhaft für das Schicksal eines Künstlers erschien. Ein kleines Stück Tafelkreide entflieht aus dem langweiligen Schulalltag und findet seine Erfüllung in der Kunst – auch wenn es sich beim Malen selbst auflöst. Nachhaltig beeindruckt von einer Lektüre war auch Richard Strauss, dem Cosima Wagner das Lesen von Cervantes' Roman über die grotesken Erlebnisse Don Quixotes und Sancho Panzas empfohlen hatte. Seine symphonische Dichtung ist nicht nur eine Variationsfolge »über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters «, sondern auch eine Art Sinfonia Concertante, bei der das Solo-Cello Don Quixote darstellt, die Solo-Viola zusammen mit den tiefen Bläsern Sancho Panza. Unser hauseigener Bratschist Jano Lisboa übernimmt die Solo-Viola, während sich Michael Hell, unser langjähriger Konzertmeister am Violoncello, mit diesem farbenprächtigen Konzertstück aus dem Orchesterdienst verabschiedet.

Dream yourself into a story and immerse yourself in another world - Sofia Gubaidulina was fascinated by the Czech fairy tale »The Little Chalk«, which she found so symbolic of the fate of an artist. A small piece of blackboard chalk escapes from the boring everyday school life and finds its fulfillment in art - even if it dissolves itself while painting. Richard Strauss, to whom Cosima Wagner had recommended reading Cervantes' novel about the grotesque experiences of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, was also lastingly impressed by reading it. His symphonic poem is not only a set of variations "on a theme of a chivalric character," but also a kind of sinfonia concertante, in which the solo cello represents Don Quixote, the solo viola together with the low winds Sancho Panza.
